Pedestrian Dangers In West Virginia

Cabell County recorded the second highest number of pedestrian fatalities in all of West Virginia in 2013.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 332 people died in motor vehicle accidents in West Virginia in 2013. Of those, 28 were pedestrians. Cabell County was the site of five of those pedestrian deaths. In addition, the five pedestrian fatalities in Cabell County were out of a total 14 deaths in auto accidents of all types. This includes pedestrian accidents, truck accidents, motorcycle accidents, distracted driving crashes, drunk driving accidents and more.

Kanawha County was the only county in West Virginia to lose more pedestrians that year than Cabell County. A total of six pedestrians lost their lives in Kanawha County. The counties with the next highest number of pedestrian deaths were Raleigh, Berkeley and Monongalia where three pedestrians in each county died in 2013.

News Stories Confirm The Realities

A look at news sources around the state shows reports of many different types of accidents involving pedestrians. A few examples include the following:

  • A pedestrian in Huntington died a week before Christmas last year after being hit by a vehicle according to WOWKTV.com. The person was crossing Washington Avenue in the evening and was taken to Cabell Huntington Hospital and died there.
  • A driver faces driving under the influence charges after backing over a 65-year old pedestrian in a driveway. The WNSTV.com report notes that the accident took place in the middle of the day on a Saturday at a local residence in Fayette County. The vehicle’s driver was released from custody on a $5,000 bond while the pedestrian victim was airlifted to the hospital.
  • The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department investigated an accident in Ripley that left a pedestrian in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle. The crash occurred near a state police department location according to WSAZ.com.

These are just a sampling of the types of stories that highlight the dangers that pedestrians face every day.

How Can Pedestrians Improve Safety And Get Help?

It is important for pedestrians to remember that they have rights and their safety matters. This is so whether walking through a grocery store parking lot, crossing a street or jogging on a sidewalk. Some things that pedestrians can do are to proactively make themselves visible to motorists and to follow all traffic signals and signs.

When the right safety measures on the part of a pedestrian fail to prevent a serious accident, more help is needed. Victims should always contact an attorney in these situations.
