The deadliest construction injuries

Construction is one of the biggest industries in West Virginia and the rest of the country. But, it is also one of the deadliest. In 2013, about 20 percent of all workplace injuries in America resulting in a fatality were in the construction industry. There are four main causes of these deaths, each of which is preventable.

The most common type of construction site accident is falling. More often than not, workers are up high on scaffolding, on ladders or for some other reason off the ground. If they are not properly harnessed and other safety measures are not in place, one slip could lead to disaster.

Similarly, those on the ground are also at risk when workers are up high. Falling objects, like debris or paint cans, could easily kill someone. One of the best ways to prevent this is to have all employees wear the proper personal protection equipment and to be aware of their surroundings.

Third on the list is electrocution. While this most often refers to electricians, it can also affect other workers on the site. Always be aware of your surroundings, and avoid being near live wiring if you can. In addition, any time you are using a ladder near power lines, never use a metal one.

Finally, getting caught in-between can crush or suffocate a worker. Generally, this type of workplace injury accident is associated with trenches and other types of excavation projects. Always follow OSHA guidelines in regards to depth and width, and always have a spotter.

If you have been injured on the work site and are having difficulty filing for workers’ competition, a personal injury attorney may be able to help.
