How many people die in West Virginia motorcycle crashes?

If you love riding your motorcycle along the lovely roads of West Virginia, you are not alone. With spring here and summer right around the corner, now is prime motorcycling season for this year. However, in addition to tuning up your bike and getting it road ready, you should also review some basic safety tips and facts about motorcycle risks and accidents.

It is a sad reality that bikers are at a serious disadvantage if involved in a crash with a car, truck or other type of vehicle. But, just how many people actually die in these crashes each year? Records from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that motorcycle fatalities make up a notable amount of West Virginia’s total vehicular deaths each year. A look at the five years from 2010 to 2014 shows the following:

  • In 2010, 33 out of 315 deaths were motorcyclists.
  • In 2011, 27 out of 338 people who died were bikers.
  • In 2012, there were 31 riders who died and 339 total traffic fatalities.
  • Motorcyclists accounted for 24 out of 332 traffic deaths in 2013.
  • A total of 272 people died in crashes in 2014, 26 of which were bikers.

Each year, the majority of bikers who died were wearing helmets at the time of their crashes.

In southwestern West Virginia, Cabell County lost more motorcyclists in these five years than did any other of its neighboring counties. Seven bikers died in Cabell County while four died in Putnam County, four in Mason County and three in Wayne County.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but general information about motorcycle fatalities in West Virginia.
