The number of drunk driving accidents this year is lower than last year, but people still continue to drive while intoxicated. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the accidents caused by drunk drivers cost taxpayers $437 million in 2011. A car accident in nearby Huntington, West Virginia, has left a man in critical condition, and another man has been charged with DUI after a recent crash. Accidents of this sort are tragic because in most cases, they could be prevented. This case is an example of that.
The accident occurred on Dec. 12. A 28-year-old man was a passenger in a car that was struck by another vehicle driven by a 34-year-old man. The other passengers and the driver that struck the other car were not injured. The 28-year-old suffered severe injuries, including broken ribs and a broken neck.
The driver of the car that struck the other car failed all three administered field sobriety tests. He was arrested and charged with DUI. His bond was set at $15,000 cash. It was not reported whether he was still in custody or if he was released after posting bail.
It is unknown whether the man who was injured will walk again because of his injuries. The cost of the man’s care will be expensive, but since he was the victim of someone else’s negligence, he has a right to seek compensation for his injuries and expenses.
