3 injured, 1 killed when driver misses exit

According to reports, a South Carolina man was killed and three people were injured when he apparently missed his exit. The accident occurred on March 6 around 11:30 p.m. in Charleston on Interstate 77 southbound past the 35th Street exit.

Law enforcement officers with the Charleston Police Department reported that the 21-year-old Charleston man driving the vehicle was thrown from the car in the crash. The man had reportedly lost control of his vehicle after he missed the 35th Street exit. Upon missing it, he struck a light pole, which caused his ejection. The man landed on the nearby railroad tracks. After striking the light pole, the car continued on, smashing its passenger side into a concrete wall before coming to a stop.

Responding emergency personnel transported the driver as well as all three passengers to the hospital for treatment. The driver succumbed to his injuries there. While one passenger received serious injuries in the accident, the other two who were injured suffered injuries that were deemed not life threatening. Officers submitted samples for toxicology testing, but they have stated they do not believe either alcohol or drugs was involved in the accident's cause. The seriously injured 18-year-old passenger remains in the hospital while the other two have reportedly been released.

When a person receives serious injuries in a car accident due to the negligent actions of the driver, the injured victim may want to consider filing a personal injury civil lawsuit. In the event that the driver was killed in the crash, his or her estate may be the named defendant. If the estate is found liable, the injured plaintiff may recover damages designed to compensate them for their losses.
