How to qualify for Social Security Disability

If you are experiencing a situation that leaves you facing the inability to work, you may wish to consider filing for Social Security Disability. Like other people in West Virginia, this could happen as a result of a workplace accident, a medical diagnosis or some other event or situation. Regardless of what causes your disabled status, you will need to meet Social Security’s criteria for being determined officially disabled. This designation is required in order for you to receive Social Security Disability.

The Disability Determination Services is the office responsible for identifying who is and is not disabled in the eyes of Social Security. The methods of determining disability now include the ability for some diagnoses to render a disabled result without the need for additional steps. For example, if you are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Social Security will consider you disabled based upon that diagnoses.

Beyond specific diagnoses, there are also defined lists of other conditions or impairments that will result in a determination that you are officially disabled. Even if your condition or problem is not on these lists, you may still qualify as disabled. Some of the criteria are that your condition be unable to be remedied, last at least 12 months, or be likely to result in the end of your life.

When it comes to your job, your ability to work in your previous position or in another position will also be evaluated. If you would like to learn more about Social Security Disability, please feel free to visit the disabled worker benefit page of our West Virginia personal injury website.
