Can I get SSD for a mental health disorder?

West Virginia residents who think about Social Security Disability Insurance many generally only think of it in relation to disabilities that are physical in nature. However, many people may be unable to work and support themselves due to mental disorders. In some cases, Social Security Disability benefits may be available to help provide necessary income at these times.

There are many factors that go into determining whether or not a particular mental health disorder will qualify a person for SSD. According to the Social Security Administration, one of the requirements for SSD is a disability that is expected to or has already lasted longer than one calendar year. The level to which a person’s disability prevents work will also be considered. Information will be required from medical providers and should include treatment and diagnoses details. Some self-reported information will also be required. The ability to manage daily life, handle social situations, and concentrate on tasks will be taken into consideration.

Some conditions that may qualify you for Social Security Disability include schizophrenia, anxiety, substance abuse and autism. Personality disorders, intellectual disorders and other conditions involving paranoia may also lead you to be eligible for SSD. If your diagnosis alone does not qualify for SSD, your functional capacity and ability to pursue gainful employment will be evaluated as well.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but rather to give West Virginia residents an overview of the types of mental health conditions that may qualify a person for benefits under Social Security Disability.
