New technology could be the answer to distracted driving

West Virginia readers know that distracted driving continues to be a serious problem, both in the state and across the country. Despite laws, safety awareness campaigns and other efforts, many drivers still make the choice to engage in dangerous behavior when behind the wheel. Distraction is one of the leading threats to the safety and well-being of all motorists.

Lawmakers have tried to pass laws to curtail phone use by drivers, and other groups have put considerable effort into educating people about the dangers of distracted driving. However, the true answer to this seemingly unfixable problem could lie in technology. You may ask yourself, does it make sense to fix a problem related to technology with more technology? The answer to this question may be AI.

How can AI help?

Artificial intelligence is a rapidly growing technology that provides various benefits to several different types of industries. It is possible to apply the principles of AI and use them for increased road safety by using it to monitor driver behaviors and, perhaps, eventually identify drivers who choose to text and drive or use their phones.

As you may know, AI is a hot topic at the moment. Many people disagree with its widespread use, and there are others who think increased vigilance and monitoring could limit the privacy of the average citizen. However, it is possible that traffic cameras operated by AI could help curb distracted driving. Consider the following:

  • Most cities already use traffic cameras and monitoring systems at intersections.
  • AI technology can quickly identify distracted drivers and send a report to authorities with the tag number and other identifying information.
  • It is possible that AI can eventually identify dangerous or distracted drivers through facial recognition.

Technology is changing virtually every area of life, including the choices people make while behind the wheel. Eventually, technology can also be the best and most effective way to ticket drivers who choose to engage in dangerous behaviors.

Holding drivers accountable for their actions

If you are the victim of an accident caused by a distracted driver, you have the right to seek a full and fair recovery. You do not have to wait for the right technology or new laws to hold drivers accountable for the harm you suffered as a result of their actions and decisions. Through a personal injury claim, you may be able to recoup your financial losses and secure appropriate damages for your pain and suffering.
