For most West Virginia residents, the Fourth of July holiday weekend is a time of celebration, relaxing and spending time with friends and family. It offers a welcome break from everyday responsibilities and gives people an opportunity to remember many things about our country for which they can be grateful. For others, however, this holiday can be marred by tragedy. The Fourth of July often sees an increase in highway traffic volume. This can also give rise to an increase in vehicle accidents.
One serious crash did occur just south of Charleston, ruining the Independence Day festivities for several people. According to reports, two vehicles collided near a three-way intersection on a stretch of U.S. Route 119 in the early morning hours on Monday, the Fourth of July. Upon being hit on the side, one vehicle ripped into two pieces, throwing three people out of the vehicle completely. One of these people died.
Four people were hurt and required treatment at a hospital. Details of their injuries or conditions are not known. No information was provided as to whether or not alcohol, fatigue or speed may have contributed to the crash. There was also no mention about any charges filed against one or both drivers.
