Misconceptions about the dangers of distracted driving

Distracted driving is a serious issue that threatens the safety and well-being of every driver on West Virginia roads. While most drivers are fully aware of the dangers of distracted driving, many of them believe that they can still do certain things and drive safely. Misconceptions about the dangers of distracted driving can have serious or fatal consequences.

You may associate distracted driving with texting, and while that is one of the most common forms of distracted driving, it is not the only one. There are many other factors that can take a driver’s attention and lead to an increased chance of an accident. If you suffered physically, emotionally and financially because of a distracted driver, you may have grounds to pursue legal recourse, regardless of the reason for the distraction.

Multi-tasking behind the wheel

Many people think they can multitask behind the wheel, especially if they are not actually texting and driving. Despite what many drivers may assume about their own abilities behind the wheel, a recent study into the behaviors of drivers learned the following:

  • Even if a driver has both hands on the wheel, talking on the phone can lead to distraction, as well as slower reaction times and the time required to notice and process hazards.
  • Talking to a passenger can be as distracting as using a phone while driving. It takes a driver’s attention off the road and the task at hand. These conversations can decrease overall driver awareness.
  • Simply dialing a phone can be as dangerous as typing out a text message while driving, even if a driver removes his or her eyes from the road for just a second.

In all of its forms, distracted driving is always dangerous, always reckless and always preventable. You can hold these negligent drivers accountable through a civil claim filed after an accident caused by distracted driving. You have the right to a full and fair recovery.

You do not have to stay silent

Often, victims of distracted driving feel confused by the legal options that could be available to them. It is not always easy to know where to start, but you may find it helpful to seek a complete evaluation of your case as soon as possible after your accident.

After learning of your options and rights as a victim of distracted driving, you can determine if you should move forward with a personal injury claim to help recover your accident-related losses.
